White, painful sores in my mouth?

About a week ago I had a canker sore on the back of my tongue that was very painful. During the process of that going away, I discovered a small, white, painful sore below my bottom teeth. In a few days, the pain has gotten worse, and now my bottom gums are turning dark red. I'm starting to get worried. What could this possibly be?
