Would a Pentax K-X turn on with cheap batteries?

It usually works with my rechargeable batteries but they've run out so i've put them on charge, but in the meantime I thought I try the camera with cheap normal alkaline batteries and it wont turn on. Is this simply because there is not enough power in the cheap batteries or is my camera broke? Should I be worried? I have to wait till morning to try my rechargeables!
